PE and Sports Round-up 2006!

Charlton Pupils playing sportOnce again we have had a very busy and successful sporting year; our pupils have represented the school and the borough with distinction. The PE curriculum offers a range of activities that fulfill national curriculum standards and beyond, each and every pupil swims once a week both in the school swimming pool and at local leisure centres, our key stage 4 pupils access sporting provision both within school and the wider community. The PE department currently offers 4 after school hours clubs in gymnastics, cricket, fitness and swimming. We intend to offer additional clubs in the autumn term. The school has entered teams throughout the academic year in the South London Disability football league with unparalleled success, the panatholon challenge, table cricket at the Oval, boccia and in the London Youth games representing Greenwich borough. The school is focused on maintaining and improving the health of our pupils. Healthy options is an integral component in this vision. Pupils undertake fitness work in the school gym, jogging in Charlton Park, yoga, healthy eating and movement therapy to mention a few. We are thus providing more than the Governments recommended two hours high quality PE and school sport for our pupils. Charlton School is the hub site for the North Greenwich school sports partnership, responsible for improving the quality of provision for sport and PE in 35 primary schools in North Greenwich. Wednesday the 28th of June 2006 witnessed the first partnership festival of movement. One hundred children from schools across the borough participated in gymnastics, dance and athletics supported by Greenwich Dance Agency and Falcon Spartak Gymnastics. The school was fortunate to have the Mayor of Greenwich and Judy Oakes O.B.E in attendance. Judy has represented Great Britain on 87 occasions (more than any one else) and she was a Commonwealth Gold medalist in 1998. Judy was on hand to share her experiences with very attentive pupils.

The day would not have been such a huge success had it not been for the dedication and hard work of Nina Tierney and the Junior sports Leaders from Blackheath Bluecoat School.
