Ashleigh - Downing Street

Filed under: Awards, School Trips — school @ 10:58 am

Last term, I wrote a story using my Tellus* called The Big Fight. It was about my friend Georgina and I fighting over the pop star Shayne Ward. I entered my story in a competition and was invited to a reception at 10 Downing Street! I went with my mum and Katie from school on a minibus. The reception was to raise awareness for people who use communication aids. Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and his wife were there. I spoke to them using my Tellus. It was lovely inside and I wish I could live there. We heard other people telling stories using their communication aids. It was a really good evening out.

* A Tellus is an aid, which allows Ashleigh to communicate with others.

Young Voices - O2 Performance

Filed under: Other, School Trips, music — school @ 9:47 am

On 27th November the choir took part in the Young Voices Concert at the O2. All term the students have worked hard in learning the set songs for this performance and on the day sang along with 7000 other school children to a mass audience. There was a live band on stage and we performed alongside Des’ree as part of the Big Sing, a world record attempt for the most number of children simultaneously singing around the country. It was a fantastic event and a great opportunity for our students to sing alongside other schools and perform with various professional musicians and dancers. Well done to everyone who took part, students and staff, to make this such a memorable event!

Move Day

Filed under: School Trips — school @ 7:54 am

On November 7th 2008, our school celebrated International MOVE day by doing an Olympic torch relay around the O2. We took the students’ physio equipment with us and they passed the torch between them in their walkers, bikes and mobile standing frames. A lot of classes came to offer their support and all the cheering and clapping was really loud! We were joined by representatives from Willow Dene and Millenium schools who enjoyed the day as much as we did. Well done to those who took part and a big thank you to those who came to cheer us on!

Toby Hewson talkPost 16 students enjoyed a very interesting presentation by Toby Hewson last week. Toby came in to talk to students about his life and setting up and running his own company called JustDifferent at just 26 years old. He gave some very good advice to students on making the most of their time in school and to staff he requested that we are ambitious for our students and not just for what may be achievable but what may seem impossible. Toby was also filmed by the film production students and interviewed by Georgina.
