This year is the year of Communication and each month is themed with October being
‘More than Words’
www.thecommunicationtrust.org.uk/
Here at Charlton School we embraced the theme to integrate a week of celebrating and promoting all the ways we communicate apart from spoken voice.
Activities included the whole school learning new signs and using chat boards in our communication sessions. Creating a talking tree where all students attached a label on how they communicate, what they like to talk about and who they like to talk to the most. We shared with
other classes to find out more about different ways we communicate.
On Thursday we had a special ‘More than words day’ where we all worked together to come up
with a non-verbal song, using symbols, objects of reference and communication aids which we videoed and performed at Assembly. We also took on the challenge of having some non-verbal sessions and areas of the school.
After our end of
half term assembly we all sent messages up into the sky inside balloons. See where they went even as far as France!
The week turned into a huge success for raising awareness of our non-verbal communicators both in school and our wider community.
